Exotic pet surrender event held at Norskedalen a success

COON VALLEY, Wis. — J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) says an exotic pet surrender event held at the Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center over the weekend was success with 38 animals being surrendered. This unique event provided a safe, judgment-free opportunity for individuals to surrender exotic pets they could no longer care for—no questions asked.

A total of 38 animals were surrendered during the event, including:

  • 11 fish left behind when the owner’s ex-boyfriend moved out
  • A boa constrictor diagnosed with adenovirus, posing a risk to the owner’s other snakes
  • 5 fish whose owner was moving and unable to bring them along
  • 2 parakeets that had been neglected
  • 17 Australian rainbowfish that no longer fit their owner’s changing aquarium setup
  • A leopard gecko in need of veterinary care
  • A hedgehog with a prickly personality and some special needs

“People often don’t know where to turn when they can’t keep an exotic pet,” said John Moyles, Director of JRAAR. “Events like this not only give animals a second chance—they also help protect our native ecosystems from the harmful effects of pet releases into the wild.”

During the event, guests also had the opportunity to meet animal ambassadors, learn about responsible pet ownership, and take memorable photos at a rescue-themed photo booth.

In regions like Wisconsin, rehoming options for exotic pets—especially fish, birds, and reptiles—are limited. Without safe alternatives, some individuals may feel pressured to release pets into the wild, an act that can be fatal for the animal and harmful to local wildlife. This event aimed to provide an ethical, responsible solution.

JRAAR organized the event with support from Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center, the Pet Advocacy Network, and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes. The event was made possible through generous support from Petco Love and Festival Foods.
