Vernon County Sheriff’s Office report for the week ending Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025
10/12 A resident reported her mailbox on County Road P in the town of Christiana was damaged during the night. A sheriff’s deputy responded to the scene and noted silver vehicle parts possibly belonging to a truck near the mailbox. It is believed the vehicle was traveling westbound at the time of the strike. There are no suspects at this time.
10/12 A sheriff’s deputy investigated a traffic complaint concerning a possibly impaired driver on a UTV on W. Kickapoo Street in the Village of Readstown.
10/13 Extra patrol was requested on a stretch of US Highway 14 on the east side of Readstown toward the Sugar Grove area after receiving reports of safety violations from a Kickapoo Area School bus driver. 10/13 A deputy stopped to coax a goose off of State Highway 35 in the Town of Bergen. It was reported the goose appeared to be wounded and was unable to walk straight. The goose went into the weeds along the side of the road.
10/14 A deputy responded to a residence in the Town of Bergen regarding an allegedly stolen tractor. After further investigation, it was determined the tractor and its trailer had been stolen from Home Depot USA Inc. and later listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace. The party in possession of the tractor and trailer stated they had purchased them about a month earlier. The tractor and trailer were taken to the sheriff’s office impound pending further investigation and collaboration with the originating agency. The Vernon County resident is fully cooperating with the investigation and Sheriff Torgerson is sorry the resident was a victim of these crimes.
10/14 The Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a married couple claiming they were being scammed. They felt their computer and phones had been hacked and they had been directed to purchase gift cards. They contacted their bank to protect their account. The party was advised to end all communication with the scammers and to take their computer and phones in to be checked out.
10/16 Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch received a call from a motorist stating they had almost hit an Amish buggy in the Town of Franklin due to rainy and foggy conditions. The caller expressed concerns regarding the Amish buggy not possessing any lights or slow-moving vehicle signage. The caller stated it is an ongoing issue in the area.

10/19 A sheriff’s deputy was called to the Village of Readstown regarding a recently purchased camper that was stolen from a hunting property. Cameras on the property showed the camper being taken by the original seller. The deputy determined that the seller of the camper wanted it back and was told the money needed to be returned to the buyer. Trespass to Private Land charges are being considered.
10/19 A sheriff’s deputy and officers with the Viroqua Police Department responded to a residence on N. Harrison Hollow Road in the Town of Viroqua for a domestic disturbance.
10/20 A semi got hung up on the guard rail along State Highway 33 within Wildcat Mountain State Park after making evasive maneuvers to avoid contact with another semi’s trailer that had crossed the center line while descending the hill. Both lanes of traffic were briefly closed while the semi dislodged itself from the guardrail. The driver reported no injuries.
10/20 A sheriff’s deputy responded to a residence on State Highway 82 in the Town of Hillsboro after the homeowner reported hearing a vehicle revving at the end of their driveway. Contact was made with the driver who appeared to have run off the shoulder of the highway and became stuck in the marshy ditch. The driver was taken into custody and processed for Felony Bail Jumping, Failure to Keep Vehicle Under Control, and Operating After Revocation and transported to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
10/21 A deputy investigated a report of stolen items from an enclosed utility trailer at a property on Nilsestuen Road in the Town of Clinton. The lessee of the property reported other incidents over the last year including additional missing items and tires being slashed. The case is closed pending more information.
10/22 Dispatch received a call regarding a domestic disturbance. Deputies responded to a residence on 17th Avenue in the Town of Whitestown and a male was taken into custody for Domestic Battery-Simple Assault, Domestic Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting or Obstructing an Officer and transported to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
10/23 A sheriff’s deputy assisted Ontario Police Department with a search warrant at a residence on N Garden Street in the Village of Ontario resulting in the arrest of a male and female for Possession w/Intent/Deliver Narcotics. They were transported to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
10/24 Deputies initiated a traffic stop on State Highway 33 near Preslik Road in the Town of Hillsboro for a UTV operating on a highway.
10/24 A deputy investigated threats made over Snapchat. Contact was made with the parties making the threats and they indicated the complainant owed them money. They were directed to go through the courts and stop contact through Snapchat.
10/24 The sheriff’s office received complaints of traffic not stopping for school busses. The situation will be monitored and action taken.
10/25 Sheriff’s 911 Dispatch received a complaint of a trespasser on some hunting property near County Road Y in the Town of Jefferson. A sheriff’s deputy made contact and the person explained they were under the assumption the land was public. They apologized and left.
