DNR asking for public’s help in the investigation of fire that destroyed a Great River State Trail bridge

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking the public’s help on the ongoing investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed the 68-year-old Tank Creek Bridge in Trempealeau County on the Great River State Trail.

The fire occurred in the evening on Thursday, May 15. No injuries were reported; however, the bridge was a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the public’s help is needed.

“Any information from the public will be welcomed,” said DNR Lt. Warden Chris Shea. “Even if the information seems too small to matter, it may be important to find the cause of the fire that destroyed the Tank Creek Bridge.”

The DNR asks the public to share any information with the DNR’s confidential Violation Hotline online or by calling 1-800-847-9367.

The bridge is one of 21 on the Great River State Trail, which extends through the upper Mississippi River valley and connects Trempealeau and Onalaska. The Tank Creek Bridge was originally built in 1957 as a railroad bridge for the abandoned Chicago-Northwestern railroad line. Due to its location, there is no reroute in place, and it is closed until further notice.
