WESTBY, Wis. – Vernon County Sheriff Torgerson reports a medical episode was likely the cause of an accident in rural Westby last weekend that sent a Richland Center man to the hospital. The Sheriff’s report for the incident states that on Sunday, April 6, at approximately 4:45 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center was notified of a single-vehicle rollover on County Road D, east of Hall Road in rural Westby, in the Town of Clinton.

The driver of the vehilce was identified as Ralph E. Smalley, 62, of Richland Center, Wis. the report goes on to day that Smalley was operating a pickup truck west on County Road D when he experienced a suspected medical episode. The vehicle left the roadway on a curve, traveled down an embankment, struck trees, overturned, and came to rest on its roof.
Smalley was able to exit the vehicle on his own and was transported to Vernon Memorial Healthcare, in Viroqua, WI, by La Farge Area Ambulance.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the La Farge Fire Department, La Farge Area Ambulance, and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
