Vernon County Sheriff’s Report for the week ending Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025

10/26 A deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling 72 mph in a 55 mph zone in the Town of Kickapoo. The driver’s parent were notified of the traffic stop and the juvenile was cited for speeding.

10/26 A deputy was dispatched to State Highway 162 in the Town of Bergen regarding a 4-year-old child found along the side of the highway. After the child was identified it was discovered he had unknowingly left the residence while his grandfather was in the shower. The child was unharmed and safely returned to his family.

10/27 A property owner reported their shop on County Road O in the Town of Harmony had been burglarized. The suspects entered and were unsuccessful in gaining access to a safe, but an estimated $200 cash had been removed from a small lock box. It was reported this was the third burglary incident within the past three weeks.

10/27 A resident reported a container of yogurt had been thrown at their mailbox on Lovaas Ridge Road causing not only a mess but a dent to the mailbox. A deputy responded to the scene and documented the damage and the evidence. The investigation continues.

10/28 A sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of a car versus ATV crash near the intersection of State Highway 27 and Nelson Road in the Town of Franklin. The Viroqua Fire Department was initially summoned; however, additional units were cancelled upon arriva of the fire chief. No injuries were reported. Vernon Electric Cooperative was notified about possible damage to a utility pole. The striking vehicle was towed from the scene.

10/30 A deputy initiated a traffic stop on US Highway 61 in the Village of Readstown. During the stop it was determined that the driver had an active felony warrant through the Department of Corrections. The driver was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine and THC (2nd+ Offense). They were transported to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

10/30 Deputies responded to a residence on in the Town of Christiana for a domestic disturbance.

10/31 A resident on Oliver Road in the Town of Sterling called to report poaching in the area and that gunshots are regularly heard throughout the night. A bullet hole was discovered in the side of their home. Investigation is ongoing.

11/1 A motorist reported striking a cow that was in the middle of Monument Rock Road in the Town of Franklin. The truck received disabling damage and was towed from the scene. The cow died as a result of the crash and the driver reported no injuries.
