WONEWOC, Wis. — A Wonewoc man was injured early Thursday after his utility terrain vehicle struck a deer and crashed in rural Vernon County, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 5 a.m. on County Road EE near Sunset Road in the town of Greenwood, according to a statement from Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson.
59-year-old Mark A. Mortimer was driving a UTV southbound when a deer entered the roadway. The vehicle struck the deer, spun, left the roadway and rolled onto its side before hitting a tree, the sheriff’s office said.
Mortimer’s cellphone automatically placed a 911 call after detecting the crash. He was transported by Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service to Emplify Health by Gundersen Hillsboro Area, also known as St. Joseph’s Hospital, for treatment. His condition was not released.
Mortimer was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The Hillsboro Area Fire Department and Peterson’s Towing also responded to the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
