TOMAH, Wis. — A 37‑year‑old Wilton woman died and five others were injured Friday when a vehicle struck an Amish buggy on State Highway 131 in the Township of Tomah, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash was reported at about 3:35 p.m. on Sept. 4. Emergency responders transported all injured occupants to area hospitals, but one of the buggy passengers later died from her injuries.

Deputies determined during the initial investigation that both the buggy and a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas were traveling southbound uphill when the Volkswagen struck the buggy. The driver, a 38‑year‑old Tomah woman, told deputies she experienced a sneezing fit just before the crash and did not see the buggy. She was briefly trapped in her vehicle but was able to get out before being taken to the hospital. She was later released.

Four additional occupants of the buggy — ranging in age from 18 months to 24 years — suffered serious injuries and remain hospitalized, the Sheriff’s Office said. Names of those involved are not being released.

Highway 131 was closed for about two hours while emergency crews worked the scene.

Agencies assisting included the Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin DNR, Tomah Ambulance, Wilton Ambulance, Fort McCoy Ambulance, Oakdale Fire Department, Wilton Fire Department, EmpliflyAir, Monroe County 911 Communications Center and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing and extended condolences to the families and community affected by the crash.
