MADISON, Wis – Today, the Wisconsin State Senate voted to pass a bill which would designate a portion of I-90 as the “Ho-Chunk World War II Code Talkers Memorial Highway” in honor of the 14 WWII veterans from the Ho-Chunk Nation that have been recognized as Code Talkers. Code talkers were Native American members of the military who communicated messages using a secret code that could only be deciphered by their native languages. State Senator Brad Pfaff (D-Onalaska) is a co-author of the legislation.
Senator Pfaff released the following statement after the vote:
“It takes a tremendous amount of courage and selflessness to step forward and serve others.”
“I was proud to co-author and vote for this legislation in support of our veterans. The dedication and work of our Ho-Chunk Code Talkers in World War II was crucial for the United States to win the war.”
“I’m grateful for their service to our country, and am glad this legislation has been passed by the Senate.”
