As the last light sets on this year’s deer hunting season, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants to thank those who helped us in the effort to better understand and slow the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD).
Thank you to everyone who submitted a sample for CWD testing. The test results from your samples provide important information on where CWD is and isn’t detected in Wisconsin. Continued testing year over year shows trends that help us understand the potential for disease spread in Wisconsin.
We also want to thank our Adopt-a-Kiosk and Adopt-a-Dumpster partners. Your participation and efforts were vital to offering CWD sampling and deer carcass disposal locations to hunters across Wisconsin.
For the 2023 deer season, we had 13 Adopt-a-Kiosk partners, supporting 14 self-service kiosks, and 49 Adopt-a-Dumpster partners, sponsoring 61 dumpsters.
Adopt-a-Kiosk partners sponsor a CWD sampling kiosk throughout the deer season at an agreed-upon location. There are four different levels of participation for Adopt-a-Kiosk volunteers. Partners are responsible for following guidelines associated with their level of involvement, but the DNR provides all kiosks and supplies.
Similarly, Adopt-a-Dumpster partners can either donate the full cost of a dumpster or participate in the DNR’s cost-sharing program. In most counties, cost sharing is available for up to three locations.
Together, we can make CWD testing and deer carcass disposal options more convenient to increase hunter participation, which is crucial to the state’s CWD response effort.
