VSN pasture walk in Westby will highlight “real world tools to extend the grazing season”

Oct. 1, 2025

WESTBY, Wis. – Local livestock producers will have an opportunity to learn strategies for extending the grazing season at an upcoming event hosted by the Valley Stewardship Network.

The “Pasture Walk, Real World Tools to Extend the Grazing Season” will take place on Saturday, October 18th, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.. The event will be held at the Zinn Family Farm, located at S1847 Nestingen Road in rural Westby.

The pasture walk will demonstrate various techniques aimed at helping livestock producers manage rising input costs. According to the event organizers, stockpile grazing and bale grazing are two proven methods to extend the time animals can graze. These practices can reduce winter feeding costs by allowing animals to forage for themselves within pastures during the winter months. An additional benefit is a reduction in costs associated with manure removal from drylots.

Attendees will see these methods in a real, world setting, as the Zinn family has been utilizing stockpiling, bale grazing, and winter water systems on their farm.

Funding for this event is provided by the USDA’s Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative.

Snacks will be provided for attendees. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by contacting Evan Dvorsak at 608-632-6166 by call or text, or by email at evan@valleystewardshipnetwork.org.
