VIROQUA, Wis. — Viroqua Utilities is set to conduct smoke testing of the city’s sanitary sewer system during the week of Nov. 17 to 21, focusing specifically on properties located in the southeast corner of Viroqua.
This testing procedure is a critical tool utilized to maintain the integrity of the public sewer system.
How Smoke Testing Works
Smoke testing is employed to efficiently pinpoint problems such as leaks, breaks, and improper connections within the sewer system. A common improper connection identified through this process is when roof drains are mistakenly linked to the sanitary sewer system.
The smoke itself is manufactured specifically for this purpose. It is important to note that the smoke is non-toxic, leaves no residuals or stains, and is not harmful to plants or animals. Furthermore, the smoke creates no fire hazard.
Resident Preparation and Expectations
Residents in the affected southeast corner are asked to take a simple, precautionary step to ensure the smoke stays out of their property.
Property owners should pour one gallon of water into all drains that are seldom used, including floor drains, and also flush all toilets. Performing this action helps prevent the smoke from entering homes or businesses by ensuring sink traps or floor drains are not dry.
The smoke should not enter your home or business unless there is defective plumbing present or traps have dried out. During the test, it is considered normal to observe smoke emerging from the vent stacks located on houses.
If smoke does enter a residence or business, this suggests an issue with the internal plumbing or a dry trap. The presence of smoke inside any structure should be reported immediately to the personnel conducting the tests. Alternatively, residents can call City Hall at (608) 637-7168 to report the issue.
