VIROQUA, Wis. – The Viroqua Police Department confirmed early Wednesday morning that the large presence of police and fire personnel in downtown Viroqua on Tuesday afternoon was due to a bomb threat to a downtown business.
Here is what we know so far:
At 6:22 p.m. the Viroqua Police sent an emergency alert asking Viroqua residents to stay clear of the downtown area due to an “active threat”. Specifically, they asked that residents avoid the area near Jefferson and Main Streets.

At 6:55 p.m. the Viroqua Police sent another alert stating the threat had been cleared by law enforcement and the area was now “deemed safe”.

Early Wednesday morning the Viroqua Police Department sent out a press release confirming a Viroqua business had received a bomb threat via email. The statement says that on Tuesday, May 27, at approximately 4:39 p.m. the Viroqua Police Department was notified by a local business owner that they received an email about a bomb that was placed inside their business. The general area was evacuated including other businesses and residences above the local businesses. The statement goes on to say the FBI was contacted and assisted with locating the IP address and the threat was unsubstantiated. The private business was still thoroughly searched with nothing found.
This is an ongoing situation and we will follow this and bring you more information as it becomes available.
Assisting with the incident was the Viroqua Police Department, Viroqua Dispatch, Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, Viroqua Fire Department, the FBI, and Vernon County Emergency Management. This investigation is still open and charges are pending.
