VIROQUA, Wis. -The Viroqua City Council swore in its newly-elected officers and elected a new council president at a special meeting on Tuesday, April 16. This was the councils orgnaiztional meeting following the April 2 election.

Clerk/Treasurer Lori Polhamus administered the oath of office for newly elected Emma Hood (Ward 4) who takes the seat vacated by Tanja Birke, along with incumbents Andrew Bergum (Ward 2), Cyndy Hubbard (Ward 6), Kristal Welter (Ward 8) and Mayor Justin Running. Running defeated challenger Patrick Robbins in the April 2 general election. Hood was the only open seat and the other Alderpersons from even numbered wards were all reelected without any opposition.
Alderpersons Steve Willis and John Thompson were nominated for the title of council president. A written ballot vote was taken and Willis came out on top with five votes, and Thompson four.
The city council also unanimously adopted council rules and approved some amendments. One of the amendments, which was proposed by Mayor Running, was to change the start time of council meetings from 7 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Another change the council approved was to dissolve the Public Property and General Government Committee that will be absorbed by other committees effective April 16, 2024.
