VIROQUA, Wis. – The city Viroqua officially cut the ribbon on it’s new city hall building this week even though city employees moved into the new building last spring. City Administrator Nate Torres said the city has been putting the finish touches on the building and it is now complete.
Former Mayor Karen Mischel said one of the first things she asked her new City Administrator Torres to do when he was hired back in 2019 was to begin looking into inspections for the old city hall building and researching options for a new building. After those inspections came back with a lot of bad news the city council gave the go ahead to hire Architectural Design Consultants, Inc. out of Lake Delton to begin laying out options for a new city hall.
A building committee was formed and numerous options were explored, including a three story city hall that included the police department at the same location. Plans changed when the old Vernon Memorial Fitness Center building became available and the decision was made to renovate that building for the police department. An option was also explored at one point to possibly buy the old Radioshack/Vernon Technology building and place either city hall, or the police department, in that building.
Total cost of the city hall project was around $3.2 million and the total cost of the police department building renovation, including the $750,000 purchase price of the building, was around $2.3 million. A ribbon cutting and open house was held at the police department in May of 2021.
