Viroqua counseling organization shifting to a non-profit

March 4, 2026

VIROQUA, Wis. — Stonehouse Counseling has officially transitioned to nonprofit status and will begin seeing clients in its new location at 427 East Oak Street, Viroqua, beginning Monday, March 23. The move allows the agency to support five full-time clinicians and provides dedicated space for group work, expanding services to better serve the community. The agency will hold an open house for the community on Monday, April 27th from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

Stonehouse was founded with a steady commitment to providing accessible, high-quality mental health care in a trusted local setting. Becoming a nonprofit creates a structure that can sustain the work long into the future and allows Stonehouse to receive grants and tax-free donations, strengthening its ability to serve individuals and families who might otherwise go without care.

A central part of Stonehouse’s mission is its commitment to serving clients with Medicaid insurance without restriction. Many mental health agencies limit the number of Medicaid clients they see due to low reimbursement rates or restrict appointment availability based on insurance coverage. Stonehouse does not. Approximately 70 percent of its clients are Medicaid recipients, reflecting an ongoing commitment to meeting community needs.

Stonehouse continues to be a strong partner with Vernon County’s Domestic Violence Initiative, strengthening pathways to change and healing for both survivors and offenders. The agency is committed to this partnership which is expanding to focus on educating community leaders and organizations in identifying those affected and connecting them to needed resources.  Funding for this initiative is currently provided by the UW School of Medicine and Public Health from the Wisconsin Partnership Program.

With the shift to nonprofit status, Stonehouse is proud to implement an equity-based pay structure. Most nonprofits pay a higher salary to their executive director and upper-level administration than they do to clinicians and other employees. Stonehouse is committed to equitable pay for all staff without a hierarchical structure.

Founder Susan Townsley shared, “Becoming a nonprofit reflects our long-standing commitment to access, dignity, and relationship. We want to ensure that mental health care in our community remains available to anyone seeking support. Our intention is to continue providing consistent, trustworthy services that serve our area for many years to come.”
