Viroqua Common Council makes amendments to the noxious weed ordinance for “No Mow May”

In March the Viroqua Common Council took two actions that impact the regulation of
lawns and yards within the City. The City of Viroqua passed a resolution designating the month of May as “No Mow May”. This designation is in place for 2024 and each following year.

During the month of May, the City ordinance regarding Noxious Weeds and Regulation of
Length of Grass (Chapter 8.32) will not be enforced. A grace period through June 3rd of each
year is provided to allow time to bring properties into compliance.
No Mow May Reminders

  • Registration is not required to participate, and you do not need to post a sign in your
    yard.
  • While everyone is encouraged to participate, property owners are free to maintain their
properties and adjoining boulevards as they see fit – so long as they are compliant with all
other laws and ordinances still in effect.
  • All property owners have until the end of day on June 3
rd to bring their properties and
adjoining boulevards back into compliance. On June 4
    th, the City will resume
enforcement of the ordinance, which includes the amendment detailed below.
Per Amendment of the Noxious Weed Ordinance (3/15/2024 Council Meeting)
All grass must not exceed 8 inches in height unless:
  • the grass is located at least 3 feet from your property line AND
  • the grass is located in an established landscaping bed. A landscaping bed is defined as
an area of plantings clearly and intentionally delineated from the remainder of the
property by a natural or human-made border.
Except during the month of May, the Viroqua Police Department will be asked to issue citations
to property owners who are in violation of this ordinance (Chapter 8.32). It is important to note
that the City will NOT be sending notifications prior to citations being issued.
