VIROQUA, Wis. — The Viroqua Chamber of Commerce is honored to announce that the 2024 Twinklefest Parade will be led by the family of Peder (Pete) Swanson, a beloved figure in Viroqua’s baseball community and a cherished local hero.

Pete Swanson’s legacy in Viroqua began in 1975 when he founded the Viroqua American Legion Baseball program. His vision for the team transformed local sports and became a cornerstone of the community. Under his leadership, Viroqua Baseball thrived, bringing together players, families, and fans from all walks of life. More than just a coach, Pete was a mentor who shaped young athletes into young men, instilling values far beyond the baseball diamond in them. Swanson also coached football, basketball, and baseball at Viroqua Middle and High School for 49 years.

Known for his exceptional coaching style and the deep connections he fostered with his players, Pete earned a reputation that extended well beyond baseball. He wasn’t just teaching the game; he was teaching life lessons. Whether on the field or off, Pete’s focus was always on building relationships—whether with students, parents, coaches, or the general public—and leaving a positive mark on everyone he met.

A lifelong lover of the game, Pete continued coaching throughout the years because of his dedication to baseball and the young men he guided. His influence extended to multiple generations, creating a legacy that will forever be remembered in the hearts of Viroqua residents. For many, Pete Swanson was the heartbeat of summer baseball in the community. In addition to his contributions to sports, Pete also served his country in the National Guard for 20 years, earning the distinction of being a Desert Storm veteran. He was a proud member of the Viroqua American Legion Post #138 and the Viroqua VFW Post #3032.

This year’s Twinklefest Parade celebrates Pete Swanson’s lifelong commitment to Viroqua, his love of baseball, and the lasting impact he had on generations of families. It is fitting that his family will serve as this year’s grand marshals, reminding us all of the strength of community, the importance of mentorship, and the spirit of baseball that has enriched Viroqua for nearly half a century.
