Viroqua Area Schools “exceed expectations” on DPI report card

Dec. 1, 2025

VIROQUA, Wis. — The Viroqua Area School District announced this week they have received four out of five stars on the 2024-2025 Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction report card, indicating the public school district “exceeds expectations” overall.

For the 2024-2025 DPI report card, VAS rated an overall score of 72.7 on a 100-point scale, up from 68.5 during 2023-2024. That school year the district was labeled as “meets expectations.”

Individual schools receiving a four-star rating included Viroqua Elementary School, Viroqua Area Montessori School, Viroqua Middle School and Laurel High School. Viroqua High School received a three-star rating and “meets expectations” as a campus.

The DPI report cards also include scores for test scores and proficiency (achievement), improvement in student learning (growth), improvement of students with the lowest test scores (target group outcomes), and enrollment and attendance measures that factor into student success (on-track to graduation), which all contribute to the district’s overall score. On the VAS report card, achievement is weighted 24.7% of the overall score, growth is weighted 25.3%, and target group outcomes and students on track to graduation are each weighted 25%.

On the 2024-2025 report card, the district scored 71.2 out of 100 in achievement, up from 65.2 in 2023-2024. The district was about nine points above the state average in the achievement subcategory of English Language Arts (72.6 vs. 63.9) and slightly more than four points ahead of the state average in mathematics (69.7 vs. 65.6).

The VAS overall growth score was 66.0 out of 100 in 2024-2025, up from 64.1 in 2023-2024. When measuring target group outcomes, the district received an overall score of 66.9 out of 100, up from 58.8 in 2023-2024. The Viroqua Area Schools outperformed the state averages in each subcategory, most notably a 75% proficiency in 3rd grade reading compared to the statewide average of 50.3%. This measure is required by Act 20, passed by the Wisconsin Legislature in July, 2023.
