COON VALLEY, Wis. – The Coon Valley Police Department released a statement today that the speed limit on Main Street (Central Avenue) through the entire downtown has been reduced to 25 miles per hour starting October 31.
In the statement Police Chief Phil Welch said the change comes after a “comprehensive safety study of the corridor including, but not necessarily limited to, speed patterns, crashes, roadway layout and pavement conditions.”
Welch went on to say that the study was conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) at the request of the village board earlier this year. Welch said the board had received a large number of complaints about speeding and unsafe pedestrian conditions through the downtown. The board made a formal request to the DOT for the 25 m.p.h. limit and the DOT in turn conducted the study.
That study concluded the “the 25 m.p.h, speed zone would be in the best interest of motorists and pedestrians in the corridor.” The village was notified of that change on Oct. 20 and a Welch said the village was expecting that change to take place weeks or months from now but it is happening this week. The highway department is putting up new signs as of today, Oct. 30.
