Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson said on Tuesday evening, March 11, the sheriff’s office was notified of an impersonation scam. Torgerson said the victim resides in the town of Hillsboro, and reported receiving a phone call from what appeared to be the sheriff’s office, phone number, 608-637-2123. Torgerson went on to say that the caller claimed that the victim had outstanding arrest warrants for failure to appear for jury duty, and that this was a federal matter.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Torgerson. “This was clearly a scam, and our victim was alert and did not send any money, as that is their usual motivation. Please be wary of these scams and report any suspicious activity to the sheriff’s office.”
