Vernon County Sheriff’s Report for the week ending Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026

12/28  Deputies responded to the 11000 block of State Highway 82 in the Town of Stark for a vehicle that slid off the roadway and down into a creek. Occupants were able to self-extricate and reported no injuries. The vehicle was towed.

12/28  A driver was warned after running a stop sign and nearly hitting an ambulance near Smith Lane and Railroad Street in the Village of Readstown. The driver stated falling snow made the ambulance difficult to see.

12/29  Sheriff’s 911 Dispatch received notification of a burglar alarm at a business on Norwegian Hollow Road in the Town of Jefferson. Deputies learned a delivery person inadvertently set off the alarm.

12/29  A deputy assisted a business on County Road D in the Town of Clinton with a bad check that was issued to them by a customer.

12/30  Sheriff’s 911 Dispatch was notified of a one vehicle accident on Cherry Grove Road at Orchard Road, in the Town of Viroqua. The driver attempted to turn south onto Orchard Road, but due to the weather conditions was unable to make the turn safely. The driver overcorrected and went into the ditch, striking a fiberoptic box owned by Frontier Communications. No injuries were reported. Assisting at the scene were the Viroqua First Responders, Viroqua Fire Department, and Tri-State Ambulance.

12/30  A tow company was called to a slide off near US Highway 14 and Cut-A-Cross Road in the Town of Coon. The tow company had concerns about the driver and requested deputies come to the scene. Once there, deputies found the driver displaying signs of possible intoxication. The driver was taken into custody, processed for Operating Under the Influence – 2nd Offense and transported to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.  Sheriff Torgerson will release further details on Monday afternoon.

1/1        A male was cited for repeatedly trespassing at a property on Smythe Avenue in the Town of Sterling and attempting to remove property.

1/2        A business on Water Avenue in the City of Hillsboro called to report a disorderly patron who had been asked to leave but was refusing. The male left on foot after refusing a ride home from deputies. Later that evening, the male was taken into custody at a residence on State Highway 33 in the Town of Hillsboro following a domestic incident for a number of offenses including Battery-Simple Assault, Strangulation and Suffocation, Criminal Damage, Resisting or Obstructing an Officer, and Operating with Prohibited Alcohol Concentration – 1st Offense.
