Vernon County Sheriff’s Report for the week ending Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026

2/23 A Sheriff’s deputy stopped to assist what appeared to be a disabled vehicle on State Highway 56 near County Road S in the Town of Liberty. The occupants were tending to a sick child in the vehicle and were then back on their way.

2/23 Dispatch received multiple traffic complaints of a vehicle with Minnesota plates traveling southbound towards Viroqua at a high rate of speed. Sheriff deputies and officers from the Viroqua Police Department responded. The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed, failing to pull over until it reached US Highway 14 and County Rd J in the Town of Franklin. The driver received citations for Reckless Driving-Endanger Safety, Unreasonable and Imprudent Speed, and Passing in No-Passing Zone.

2/23 A driver called in to report having struck a dog in the road near State Highway 56 and Nottingham Road in the Town of Jefferson. They reported front end damage to the vehicle and were turning around as they were concerned the dog was likely hurt or deceased. The dog was found in its yard and the owner reported it had gotten out of the house about an hour prior. The owner was going to contact their veterinarian for evaluation and the driver reported no injuries.

2/24 Deputies responded to a residence on South Commercial Street in the Village of Viola for a report of male engaging in disorderly conduct. The male was returned to his residence and asked to remain there for the evening.

2/26 Close to 100 sheep were reported to be in the road on State Highway 162 in the Town of Hamburg. A call was placed to the suspected owners but the deputy was unable to make contact with them. A short while later the deputy arrived on scene and found the sheep were no longer in the road.

2/27 Deputies responded to a residence on North Silver Street in the Village of La Farge after receiving a report from a female who had been punched in the face by another female that had previously been trespassed from the property. A Viroqua police officer met deputies at a residence on Main Street in the City of Viroqua and took the female into custody and charged her with Battery-Simple Assault, Criminal Trespass to Dwelling,

Misdemeanor Bail Jumping, and Disorderly Conduct. She was then transported to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. The initial caller reported minor injuries.

2/28 A Coon Valley police officer initiated a traffic stop on Central Avenue in the Village of Coon Valley. During the stop, two occupants were found to be impaired with open intoxicants in the vehicle, as well as being in possession of illicit drugs and other paraphernalia. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the stop to assist after a fight broke out in the stopped vehicle. The driver was taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center for Operating While Under the Influence. A passenger was cited for UAL, Possession of Marijuana, Disorderly Conduct, and possible charges for Battery are being referred.
