Vernon County Sheriff’s Office to host local sites for 2026 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

March 23, 2026

VIROQUA, Wis. — The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office will host two local collection sites on Saturday, April 25, as part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to help fight the opioid epidemic.

The national event, organized under the leadership of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), allows the public to turn in unused or expired prescription drugs. The initiative is designed to prevent unused prescription drugs from finding their way into the wrong hands, which can lead to dangerous and often tragic outcomes.

For the 2026 event, which begins at 10:00 a.m., Vernon County residents can drop off their unwanted medications at two locations:

  • Stoddard Village Hall: 180 N. Main St., Stoddard, Wis.
  • Readstown Village Hall: 116 N. 4th St., Readstown, Wis.

When it comes to the rules of participation, residents should know that the collection process is designed to be completely safe and anonymous.

Wisconsin has been a leading state in the nationwide initiative. According to state officials, Wisconsin residents have collected a total of 1,422,970 pounds of unwanted medications since the Drug Take Back program began in 2010.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul praised the state’s ongoing participation in a recent press release from the Sheriff’s Office.

“Wisconsin’s continued success with Drug Take Back is really extraordinary,” said Kaul. “Thank you to the partners around the state whose efforts have helped make this such an outstanding program in Wisconsin”.

Wisconsin currently ranks third in the nation for the most medications collected since the program’s inception, trailing only Texas, which has collected 1,559,313 pounds, and California, with 1,495,633 pounds. Nationwide, the Drug Take Back events have successfully removed 20,391,815 pounds—or over 10,195 tons—of unwanted medications from circulation.
