Vernon County Sheriff requesting bond revocation for Viroqua man after traffic stop, ignoring court order

VIROQUA, Wis. – Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson said he will ask the Vernon County District Attorney to petition the court to revoke bond for 36-year-old Dustin Allen Mudd after he was arrested over the weekend for operating while intoxicated in violation of court orders. According to the Sheriff, and court records, Mudd is currently free on bond for several other charges including knowingly violating a domestic abuse order, battery or threat to judge, prosecutor, or law enforcement officer, as well as several other charges.

According to a sheriff’s report Mudd was arrested following a traffic incident in the Town of Viroqua late Saturday afternoon. The report states that at approximately 4:30 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received a report of a blue pickup truck being operated erratically on US Highway 14, near County Road Y.  The vehicle was traveling south toward the City of Viroqua and Viroqua Police quickly responded to assist the Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle was stopped on North Main Street (US Highway 14) in the City of Viroqua.  The operator was identified as Dustin Andrew Mudd, 36, of Viroqua.  He was taken into custody for Operating While Intoxicated and Felony Bail Jumping.

The Sheriff report states traffic on US Highway 14 at that time was heavy due to the finish of the WIAA High School Sectional Wrestling Tournament in Westby.  Any motorist who encountered this vehicle on Saturday afternoon between La Crosse and Viroqua, and witnessed traffic violations are urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (608) 637-2123.  Photos of the vehicle are being released.

Mudd is being held for a bail hearing, likely to be scheduled in Vernon County Circuit Court, on Monday, Feb. 24.  Formal charges are being sought through Vernon County District Attorney Angela Palmer-Fisher.  A charge is merely an accusation.  The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Dustin Mudd has five open court cases in Vernon County, four of which are felony cases.

“Besides endangering the safety of the motoring public, this was a blatant disrespect and disregard of orders by the court.” said Sheriff Torgerson. “I will ask the district attorney to petition the court to revoke prior bonds and order the forfeiture of any cash previously posted.”

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office was the Viroqua Police Department.

The incident remains under investigation.
