Vernon County Sheriff asks for patience with non-emergency phone calls

VERNON COUNTY, Wis. – Earlier this year Vernon County began the process of implementing a new internet based phone system or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP ) system. The county’s Information Technology Department has been supervising the implementation of that system. The switch from a landline system to an internet based system was implemented in part to save the county money over the current phone system.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson issued a press release this week asking for patience from residence trying to reach the Sheriff’s Office on their non-emergency line (608-637-2123).

Sheriff Torgerson’s statement:

We have been experiencing growing pains since a new county-wide business phone system (NOT 911) was implemented two months ago. In the rare event you were to become disconnected when calling the non-emergency number (608) 637-2123 call us back.

We would like to thank the Vernon County Information Technology Department for addressing our concerns and working with the vendor when necessary. Again, this relates to the business phone system, and not to 911. There are no current issues when calling 911.

I would also like to commend all my staff, especially our communications professionals for adapting to the new system. Although most emergency calls are received through our 911 system, emergencies have been reported through our business phone system as well as many other urgent calls.

Your patience is greatly appreciated, and I welcome your feedback.

Providing the highest level of service is always our goal.

Sheriff Roy Torgerson
