Vernon County seeking residents to serve on new committee tasked with developing a county comprehensive plan

VIROQUA, Wis. – Vernon County has been attempting to move toward countywide comprehensive zoning, but in order to write a countywide zoning ordinance the county first needs to have a comprehensive plan in place. Back in 2010 when it was required by the state to have a countywide comprehensive plan in place, the county did the work to develop the plan, but at the last minute decided not to approve the plan. You can read our previous story on that issues here. Now the county will need to write a new plan before it can develop a zoning ordinance.

The County Board of Supervisors hired Mississippi River Regional Planning to help write the plan and in December approved resolutions to form a committee to oversee the process, and also approved a public input plan for that process. That resolution forming the committee requires county board representation but also some members of the public.

Members will serve two-year terms and will be responsible for facilitating the public participation plan as part of the Comprehensive Plan process. The committee will develop the County’s Comprehensive Plan and make a recommendation for approval to the County Board. The committee will recommend amendments to the Comprehensive Plan as necessary. The committee will be composed of four County Board supervisors and three community members appointed by the County Board Chair.

Interested residents should send a letter of interest to County Administrative Coordinator Cassandra Hanan at cassandra.hanan@vernoncounty.org or by mail to 400 Courthouse Square, Suite 108, Viroqua, WI 54665. Letters of interest should be submitted no later than Jan. 19.
