Vernon County Over 50 is offering a new Stepping On class. This is a research-based initiative aimed at lowering the risk of falls among older adults. In alignment with recent federal and national efforts—including the National Council on Aging’s multi-year strategy to scale community interventions—this program will provide local seniors and caregivers with the critical resources, assessments, and education needed to stay safe and independent at home.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls remain the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65 and older. Nationwide, more than 14 million older adults report falling each year, resulting in serious medical complications and billions of dollars in preventable healthcare costs.
Stepping On is offered in conjunction with the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging and will be available live and virtually at the Bethel Home Day Room, 614 S. Rock Ave. in Viroqua. The class starts Monday, September 28 from 9-11am. The class runs every Monday for 7 weeks, ending on Nov. 9. The class is offered for free will donations only.
Every older adult deserves the opportunity to age with dignity, safety, and independence. The fear of falling can often cause seniors to withdraw from activities, which paradoxically increases their risk of decline. The goal of the Stepping On program is to replace that fear with empowering, evidence-based tools that keep our community moving confidently.
