Jan. 29, 2025

VIROQUA, Wis. – The Vernon County Law Enforcement Association (VCLEA) announced this week that UW-Platteville studentTheresa Wintersdorf was awarded the Deputy Bobbie W. Dickson Scholarship for 2024.

The VCLEA says Wintersdorf was nominated by Social Worker Marla Sutton from Vernon County Human Services. Wintersdorf graduated from Westby in 2020 and she is currently in her final semester at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where she is pursuing a major in Psychology and a minor in Criminal Justice. Wintersdorf plans to use her degree by working in the social work field, specifically working with troubled youth.

“I want to thank the association for considering me as a candidate and I will be forever grateful that they assisted in my education journey.” said Wintersdorf.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson commented on the award on social media saying “On behalf of everyone at the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Torgerson would like to congratulate Theresa on being awarded this scholarship. We want only the best for you as you continue your studies at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Social work and law enforcement seems to be a joint service to our community and we appreciate you taking this path. We would also like to thank the officers of the Vernon County Law Enforcement Association and everyone who supports the work they do.”

Deputy Dickson was a Vernon County Deputy who was killed on August 8, 1986 in an accident while en route to follow up on an investigation. He was driving eastbound on State Highway 131 when a car coming the opposite direction lost control and struck his patrol car head-on.
