Vernon County Disaster Recovery Center officially opens in Westby for April storm victims

July 22, 2026

WESTBY, Wis. — The Vernon County Disaster Recovery Center officially opened its doors on Tuesday, July 21, to assist renters, homeowners, and businesses recovering from the devastating severe storms and flooding that swept through our area in mid-April.

The physical relief center is located at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 306 South Main St. in Westby, and will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m..

The facility was established to provide a dedicated, in-person avenue for anyone affected by the historic severe weather events occurring between April 13 and April 23. It serves as a centralized hub to help local residents navigate the complexities of federal and state disaster relief following the baseball-sized hail and flooding that heavily damaged properties across the community.

A wide array of resources is available at the center, with representatives on hand from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Wisconsin Emergency Management, and various county departments. These officials are available to explain disaster assistance programs, answer questions regarding written correspondence, and provide literature about repairing and rebuilding homes, businesses, and vehicles damaged by the storms.

For community members who may not have computer access or who simply prefer face-to-face guidance, the center offers the ability to sit down directly with FEMA and SBA staff to complete applications. Additionally, residents who have already applied online at disasterassistance.gov or over the phone can visit the center to get answers to follow-up questions regarding their case.

Vernon County Emergency Management officials are emphasizing one crucial reminder for the public: if you previously reported your storm damage to the county, you must still formally apply with FEMA or the SBA. Damage information reported locally to the county does not transfer to these federal agencies.

Anyone affected by the April storms is strongly encouraged to apply for assistance. Officials also warned applicants that after registering, they may receive a phone call from an out-of-state or unknown number. Residents should be prepared to answer these calls, as they are likely from a FEMA or SBA representative looking to schedule a time to visit and inspect the property damages.
