VIROQUA, Wis. – President Donald Trump has approved a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Wisconsin in response to the severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes that struck the state in April of 2026.
This declaration unlocks federal assistance for both Public Infrastructure and Individual Assistance for impacted residents in designated counties across Wisconsin, including Vernon County.
Renters and homeowners can now apply for federal assistance through DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA’s Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. Individuals using relay service, such as VRS or captioned telephone, may provide FEMA with their relay service number. A physical Disaster Recovery Center location may also be set up in the County in coordination with FEMA and Wisconsin Emergency Management, more information will come soon if a physical location is established.
If a resident previously reported damage to the County, they will still need to register with FEMA. Applicants should ensure their damaged home was their primary residence, that losses were not previously covered by insurance or other sources, and that FEMA can reach them using the contact information provided.
Information applicants should be prepared to provide:
- Contact details, including email
- Pre-disaster and current address
- Social Security number
- Annual household income
- General list of damage
- Banking information for direct deposit
- Insurance policy details, if applicable
Residents who disagree with FEMA’s determination may submit an appeal online, by mail or fax, or in person at Disaster Recovery Centers, which will be announced soon.
