VIROQUA, Wis. – Vernon County is reaching out to county residents to gather feedback in a number of key areas in order to complete a county comprehensive plan. The county does not currently have an approved comprehensive plan on file, even though technically they are legally required to have one.
The process of developing a strategic plan grew out of the county’s discussions on possibly implementing countywide zoning that started early last year. But in order to develop a zoning plan the county needs to have a comprehensive plan in place. The county has hired the Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission to help develop that plan that is required to cover nine elements. You can read about the county discussion on developing a comprehensive plan/zoning plan in our previous story here, and here.
The planning committee appointed by County Board Chair Lorn Goede includes County Board of Supervisor Representatives: Charlie Jacobson (Chair), Sandy Schweiger, Kay Stanek, Ole Yttri. Community Representatives: Pete Strachan, Mary Stanek and George Wilbur. County employees serving in an advisory capacity include County Zoning Director Matt Albright, County Conservationist Ben Wojahn, and County Land Information Officer Monique Hassman. Each committee member will serve a two year term but the goal is develop a new comprehensive plan over the six months to a year.
To develop a plan also requires a public participation plan to ensure the public has much access to input as possible. Part of that plan includes a number of ways residents of the county can give feedback or input into a plan. One of those methods is survey to gather public input in the nine elements.
Vernon County Comprehensive Plan Survey can be found here.
Input from the survey will serve as a roadmap for decision making and provide a framework for the management of growth, resources, and services. Resident input is critical in shaping the future of this area and to ensure that individual wants and needs are reflected in the decisions made on topics such as community development, land use, housing, transportation, and economic development.
