Vehicle fire spreads to field along State Highway 82 near De Soto

DE SOTO, Wis. – Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports the Sheriff’s Office 9-1-1 Dispatch Center received a report of a vehicle fire on Wednesday afternoon, November 22, 2023, at
approximately 1:00 p.m., in rural De Soto, WI, in the town of Sterling.

Sheriff Torgerson reports that the vehicle was being operated in a cornfield, on private property, along State Highway 82 near Marks Avenue when it caught fire and spread to the field. Due to heavy smoke and limited visibility, Highway 82 was closed for approximately forty-five minutes while the Wheatland Fire Department put out the fire.

No injuries were reported. Responding to the scene were the Wheatland Fire Department, Wheatland First Responders. According to the Sheriff’s Office all units left the scene shortly after 3:00 p.m..

The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and the
Wheatland Fire Department
