The city of Viroqua posted an update on the downtown street construction project. According to city officials the electrical work for the project is done at West Decker and Jefferson, and crews will be starting to pour concrete.
The project is behind schedule and city officials expressed their appreciation for the public’s patience. The project is still within the contract deadlines. City staff say they will continue to press on the contractor to keep things moving and everyone is looking forward to a new downtown space that will be inviting to patronize and safer for all.
This week was a big week for the Northwest corner of Decker where a large amount of electrical work took place. This area took longer than expected but there are now two traffic lights in operation for the first time in months. Crews also poured the curb and will be ready to pour the remainder of the street concrete Tuesday.
Jefferson has seen a lot of concrete work this week and the rest should be poured this week. A reminder, when Jefferson reopens, (possibly as early as Thursday) it will be a one-way street going into Main Street. No left turns will be allowed off Main onto Jefferson permanently as you will be driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
South Street still requires significant electrical work with the new traffic light installations including boring wires under Main Street. The plan is to complete all the electrical, asphalt and concrete work by the end of next week.
Phase four of the project should begin on November 25. This phase sees work starting on the east side of Main Street, which means traffic will be moved to the westernmost lanes of Main Street. At this time East Jefferson and East South Street intersections will be closed and operate as they do currently on the west side.
