VIROQUA, Wis. – Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports that shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8, the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a report of a single-vehicle crash along County Road NN, just south of Getter Road, rural Viroqua. The Sheriff’s Office says the operator of a mid-size SUV was driving north on County Road NN and went off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled parallel to the roadway for a considerable distance, then went further left, across a hay field. The vehicle then struck a large tree, head-on.
Sheriff Torgerson reports that evidence suggests the driver suffered a sudden medical event prior to leaving the roadway. There were a total of two occupants in the vehicle, including the driver and one passenger. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and both were pronounced dead at the scene by Vernon County Coroner Betty Nigh. The names are being withheld pending notification of family.
With the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Viroqua Fire Department, Viroqua Emergency Responders, and Gundersen-Tri State Ambulance.
The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and Vernon County Coroner’s Office.
