Town of Washington home a total loss due to early morning fire

COON VALLEY, Wis. – A Town of Washington home in La Crosse County was a total loss after fire broke out around 6:30 on Friday morning. According to the Coon Valley Fire Department the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received the call and they were dispatched to W2300 State Highway 33 for a house fire in the Washington Township of La Crosse County.

Several other fired departments were simultaneously dispatched from the Bangor-Burns Volunteer Fire Department, Cashton Fire & Rescue, Shelby Fire Department, Stoddard Bergen Fire Department, and Westby-Christiana Fire Department. While in route, units were notified that everyone was out of the home.

According to Coon Valley fire officials Shelby Fire Department Engine Two was the first unit on scene, arriving several minutes after being dispatched, and reported significant fire on the first floor of the home. The Shelby crew initiated a transitional attack through several first floor windows. As additional resources arrived on scene, crews from Shelby and Coon Valley attempted to make an interior attack, but were pushed back by intense heat and fire. Coon Valley fire goes on to say the fire quickly spread to the second floor of the home ,and crews resumed a transitional attack from outside the home. Crews again attempted to attack the fire from inside the home, but were forced to exit due to unsafe conditions and took defensive positions outside the home.

The home and contents are a complete loss and several of the family’s pets perished in the fire. The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

All units were clear of the scene by 11:00 a.m.

Also responding to the scene were the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office, La Crosse County Highway Department, Tri-State Ambulance/Gundersen Ambulance, Vernon County Emergency Management Air Trailer, Xcel Energy.
