Ted Harris inducted into Viroqua Schools Wall of Excellence, honored for 50 years of service

VIROQUA, Wis. — Ted Harris, a retired educator and longtime community servant, was inducted into the Viroqua Area Schools Excellence in Education Wall of Recognition on Saturday, Sept. 27. The ceremony, held in the Viroqua High School commons, recognized Harris for his extensive contributions to education and the community.

Harris became the 16th person honored on the Wall of Excellence, which recognizes individuals for their achievements, character, and service that bring distinction to themselves and the school district. Following the morning ceremony, a community reception was held at the new Viroqua Fire Station.

Viroqua Area Schools and the Wall of Excellence Committee released a statement acknowledging Harris’s significant influence.

“Ted Harris has made a lasting impact on education and the Viroqua community,” the statement said. “His induction recognizes not only his professional achievements but also his dedication to shaping the lives of countless students and supporting his community throughout the years”.

Harris has held numerous roles, including educator, high school principal, deputy sheriff, hazardous materials instructor, and referee. His dedication to public service was praised by local organizations and community members. The Viroqua Fire Department, where Harris served, highlighted his enduring influence.

“Ted Harris left a lasting impression on most people he met,” the Viroqua Fire Department said in a statement. “Ted dedicated his life to teaching and helping others”.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson, who attended the ceremony, also congratulated Harris on the well-deserved honor.

“Congratulations Deputy Sheriff, educator, high school principal, hazardous materials instructor, evidence and property specialist, a great man, referee, and countless other titles, Ted Harris,” Torgerson said on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office and the community. “This is very well deserved recognition.”

Greg Lawton of La Farge, who considers Harris a friend and mentor, praised his 50-year impact on the fire service throughout Wisconsin in a social media post.

“It was a privilege to attend the honoring of our hero Ted Harris last night for all he has done for us and the fire service across the State of Wisconsin,” Lawton said. “He has changed the history of the fire service for 50 years and I’m proud to call him my friend and mentor!!”.
