Tactical situation resolved at Westby mobile home community, no injuries reported

Sept. 22, 2026

WESTBY, Wis. — Authorities lifted traffic restrictions Tuesday afternoon after a tactical law enforcement situation at a mobile home community north of Westby was brought under control without injuries. Initial reports were that neighbors heard what sounded like gunshots coming from a mobile home on Douglas Street.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson said law enforcement officers responded at approximately 3:22 p.m., Torgerson said authorities had restricted traffic entering and leaving the neighborhood while tactical personnel worked to resolve the incident.

“The team is working very, very well, and I believe we’re close to having this resolved,” Torgerson said in a video update.

About 30 minutes later, the sheriff announced the situation was under control, though a law enforcement presence would remain on Douglas Street for an extended period as the investigation continued.

Traffic was allowed to resume entering and leaving the mobile home community, although motorists were advised to expect delays on Douglas Street and to avoid the area if possible.

School officials were notified that students who live in the community could safely return home, Torgerson said.

Authorities reported no injuries and said there was no ongoing danger to residents or the surrounding community. Additional information may be released as the investigation continues, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
