BOSCOBEL, Wis. – The Boscobel Police Department is reporting a fight instructor and their student both suffered minor injuries over the weekend after they were forced to do an emergency landing due to mechanical issues.
According to a Boscobel Police Department report, on Sunday, Dec. 1, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Boscobel Police Department responded to a report of an aircraft crash at the Boscobel Airport in the City of Boscobel.
The report states 18-year-old Kyle Erpelding of Cary, Illinois was operating the aircraft as a student when the aircraft suddenly began to have issues. Benjamin Wesoloski, 42, also of Cary, Illinois was the flight instructor and took over after they realized there was an emergency. Wesoloski communicated with traffic control, and they were able to locate the Boscobel Airport to do an emergency landing. While completing the emergency landing, the aircraft had lost power and their view was obscured by oil, causing the aircraft to bounce several times. Due to this, their landing gear collapsed, and the plane veered off the runway. The fuel tank ruptured and was leaking fuel as the plane came to a stop. Both occupants were uninjured.
Due to minor damage to the runway, the airport groundskeeper shut down the runway for the night. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in Washington D.C. was notified of the crash.
The Boscobel Police Department was assisted at the scene by Boscobel Fire Department and Boscobel EMS.
