“Rep. Johnson Votes For Long-Term Health Of Wisconsin, Not Short-Term Scam“
MADISON, Wis. — Representative Tara Johnson (D-Town of Shelby) released the following statement on Governor Tony Ever’s deal with legislative Republicans to shift school funding while depleting the state surplus:
“Last night, after protracted sessions in both the State Senate and the Assembly, I voted “no” on Assembly Bill 1. Wisconsinites are struggling to afford the cost of living. Inflation is rising and the national economic landscape is uncertain at best. Worse yet, new rules and regulations from the Trump Administration are jeopardizing services and supports for farmers and our most vulnerable neighbors. When the federal government fails us, Wisconsinites rely on the state for more. This is no time to spend down our long, hard earned state surplus, let alone create a state budget deficit.”
“AB1 is bad public policy. It applies a band-aid to public education funding where an infusion is needed. It was a last-ditch attempt on the part of lame-duck officials to buy a legacy for themselves with no consideration for the strength and stability of Wisconsin’s future. Seniors, farmers, hard-working residents in the 96th see this bill for what it was: an attempt to put a fresh coat of paint on a rusty, old truck.”
“I’m proud of my vote and for resisting the majority party’s false promises that the bill would fix funding problems for our public schools and put hundreds of dollars into the pockets of Wisconsinites. Those claims couldn’t be further from the true impact of this bad bill. Seniors on social security would not get a check. Individuals earning less than $15,000 annually would not get a check. More than 1.36 million Wisconsinites would not get a check.”
“My job is to protect the long-term fiscal health of the state and make wise decisions that provide positive, sustainable results for the 96th District and across Wisconsin. My no vote on AB1 was an investment in a new truck rather than a coat of paint.”
