Sparta man and juvenile passenger injured when motorcycle strikes deer

Coon Valley, Wis. – The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Saturday, June 3, just before 2 p.m., the Vernon County 911 Dispatch Center was notified about motorcycle accident on County Hwy P near Timber Coulee.

According to the report, Russell McElroy, 47, of Sparta, was driving east on his motorcycle with his 12-year-old daughter on the passenger seat. As the group the group of motorcycles they were riding with neared Kolbo Rd, a deer jumped into the road. McElroy applied the brakes but was unable to stop in time and hit the deer. The juvenile passenger was immediately thrown from the motorcycle. McElroy tried to regain control of the motorcycle but was unable to and was also thrown off the motorcycle. Both McElroy’s landed on the road near the motorcycle and suffered significant injuries.

According the report the juvenile passenger was wearing a helmet and appropriate riding gear. Russell McElroy was wearing appropriate riding gear but not wearing a helmet.

Tri-State Ambulance arrived on scene and transported both occupants to Gundersen Health in Lacrosse.
