Sheriff’s Office makes an arrest in De Soto area burglary case

June 21, 2025

DE SOTO, Wis. – The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office reports a De Soto area woman has been arrested and charged following an investigation into some missing handtools in the De Soto area.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports on Friday, June 20, just before 9:00 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a Town of Wheatland resident in rural De Soto reporting some missing property. The victim reported that a battery-operated or cordless power tool, battery, and accessories have been missing from a building since the previous night. Another power tool was reported missing for several days. A sheriff’s deputy was assigned to investigate.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., the deputy was in contact with two individuals. At around 11:04 a.m. officers made an arrest of one of those individuals identified as Jourdan LeAnn Womack, 29, of rural De Soto.

A detective from the Sheriff’s Office was assigned to assist the deputy while the investigation continued throughout the day on Friday. By early to mid-afternoon, some of the stolen property had been recovered. Evidence implicating Womack was also discovered. By 2:30 p.m., all four of the items reported stolen were recovered.

Because the time in custody before Womack is expected to appear in court will exceed forty-eight hours, a sworn probable cause affidavit was submitted to the Vernon County Circuit Court Judge Timothy J. Gaskell who made a Judicial Determination of Probable Cause late Saturday morning. A bail hearing is expected to be scheduled for Monday in Vernon County Circuit Court.

Formal charges of burglary and theft of moveable property will be sought through Vernon County District Attorney Angela Palmer-Fisher.

Womack may also face felony bail Jumping charges in Crawford or Vernon County stemming from an early May 2025 drug-related arrest in Crawford County.

Sheriff Torgerson reminds the public that a charge is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

If you have any information about this crime, or any other crime, call Vernon Co Crime Stoppers at 608-637-TIPS (8477) or submit an online crime tip at www.p3tips.com

Following documentation, inventory and identification processes, the property is expected to be returned to the owner on Saturday, June 21st.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson praised the work of his officers in the case.

“I would like to thank the entire Sheriff’s Office team for all their work, excellent communication, and follow-through to bring a quick resolution to this case,” said Torgerson. “The team has also done an excellent job supporting our Viterbo University criminal justice intern who was heavily involved in this case. It is vital that we all work together to recruit and train our future law enforcement officers.”

The investigation continues by the Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Division of Community Corrections.
