March 23, 2026

Sheriff Roy Torgerson announced last week that Detective JoEllen Egge was recently recognized with two distinguished American Legion awards.

Detective Egge was honored with:

  • Coon Valley American Legion Post 116 “Law Officer of the Year”
  • Vernon County Council of the American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, “Law & Order – Edward James Award of Commendation”

Both awards were presented Thursday evening at the Coon Valley post during a joint meeting of Post 116 and the Vernon County Council of the American Legion.

Coon Valley Post Commander Roger Mathison opened the ceremony, followed by remarks from Wisconsin American Legion Commander Nathan Morgan Bond of Lake Geneva. Sheriff Torgerson also addressed attendees during the presentation.

Sheriff Torgerson extended his sincere gratitude to Post 116 Commander Roger Mathison, County Commander Ted Wicker, and Post Service Officer Mike Callan for their continued support of local law enforcement.

The nomination process for Detective Egge began several months ago. Sheriff Torgerson also thanked Deputy Sheriff Kaye Mithum (Ret.), Social Worker Manager Theresa Berger, Social Worker Melony Hansen, Social Worker Marla Sutton, and Social Worker Mariah Everhart of the Vernon County Department of Human Services for their contributions to the nomination.

He also expressed appreciation to Chief Deputy Sutton, Detective Gjefle, Correctional Officer Klingbeil, Administrative Assistant Oldham, and On‑Call Administrative Assistant Inman for attending the ceremony. It was also a pleasure to see Sergeant Errett “Wally” Cox (Ret.), a U.S. veteran and proud member of Coon Valley American Legion Post 116.
