Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced this week he will be stopping in Viroqua for a town hall event with Democrat Rebecca Cooke, who is running for Wisconsin’s Third Congressional District. A posting for the event by Sanders office says he will be speaking about how to come together to fight the “Oligarchy”.
Cooke already received Sanders endorsement and appears to be the obvious front runner in the Democratic primary having run twice before, losing the first time in the primary to Democratic State Senator Brad Pfaff, and losing to incumbent Republican Congressman Derrick Van Orden in 2024 general election by just under 3 percentage points, or just over 11,000 votes.
The Third Congressional District has been a target for both parties given the purple makeup of voters and the narrow margins. Cooke is also likely to get support from Washington Dems who would like to flip the seat given that she outperformed both Kamala Harris and Tammy Baldwin in her district, and only lost by 3% to a staunch Trump ally in a district Trump won by 7%.
Cooke has already locked up a long list of endorsements from both moderate and progressive wings of the party.
Two other Democrats a re running against Cooke in the primary, Eau Claire City Council President Emily Berge, and Eau Claire small business owner and former city council member Laura Benjamin.
The Viroqua event is scheduled for Saturday, August 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Pierce Hill Performing Arts, S4706 Orchard Rd, Viroqua.

Just goes to show you, she’s not just the small town girl she pretends to be, she’s a far left radical
Let’s see if either one of these Democrats can say what the rest of the party can’t: “Apartheid Israel is committing Genocide against Palestinians.”
She’s got my support and I’ll be there for the town hall on Saturday. We need to end Trump fascism.
