Richland Center Police arrest knife throwing man

RICHLAND CENTER, Wis. – Richland Center Police Chief Billy Jones reports that on June 28th, a Richland Center man was arrested after reports were received by Richland County Dispatch that a man was observed swinging an axe while walking on Sextonville Road and then South Church Street.

Officers of the Richland Center Police Department responded to the area and located Travis B. Martin, 38, near the corner of South Church Street and East South Street. According to Jones the officer’s dialogue was ignored by Martin, and he ran from officers in a southbound direction. While running, Martin turned multiple times, throwing what were later identified as machete knives at the officers while running. The first knife hit the street approximately five feet in front of one officer who was pursuing Martin on foot. Two more machete knives were thrown at officers before a taser was deployed and Martin tripped and fell, Martin was then taken into custody without further incident.

Martin was searched and a total of five machete knives and a single blade axe were recovered that were either on his person or thrown at officers during the incident.

Chief Jones expressed his appreciation for the officers at the scene for their awareness and actions to do everything they could do to preserve life and protect property.

During the investigation it was learned that Martin struck multiple vehicles with his axe prior to having contact with Law Enforcement.

All charges have been forwarded to the Richland County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

The Richland Center Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Richland Center EMS, and Richland Center Fire Department.
