Prairie du Chien, Crawford County, issue a State of Emergency because of flooding along the Mississippi River

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. – Mayor Dave Hemmer signed the declaration to protect the residents of Prairie du Chien on Tuesday morning. Crawford County and the City of Prairie du Chien suffered record levels of flooding in May/April of last year and will once again be dealing with high water levels later this week.

The latest projections from the National Weather Service have the river reaching a level at or near 20.3 this weekend. The river level in Prairie du Chien hit almost 23 feet back in 2023.

ST. FERIOLE ISLAND – At the current rise the Island will be shut down at 12:00 a.m. Friday, June 28, to general public motor vehicles. Passes will be available for business owners to allow for them to check on their business and/or city parks. The Island will remain closed until further notice. The Legion Alumni and Jr. Legion game and fundraiser will still take place at the ballpark on Saturday. Access will be restricted to walking from downtown only.

SANDBAG OPERATIONS – We currently have bags that have been filled and delivered to the location at the corner of East Washington St. and North Ohio St. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections will continue to fill additional bags starting today. Those who need sandbags should collect them from the location stated. The city will assist the elderly and handicapped with placing sandbags if needed; please call the EOC at 608-326-0266.

FLOOD GATE – The flood gate on Wells Street in Prairie du Chien will be closed at 19.0.

RIVER TRAFFIC – Traffic on the Mississippi River in Crawford County will be restricted, by order of Sheriff Dale McCullick and Mayor Dave Hemmer, once the river passes 19.5 feet.

EVENTS – The Farmers Market and Music in the Park this Thursday is being moved to Lochner park tonight. The Villa Louis will be closed this week and will re-evaluate on Sunday for the next week.

STREET CLOSURES CURRENTLY IN EFFECT

• North Main St is closed from McLeod St. to Miller St.

• The Washington Street Bridge

• 6th Street (St. Feriole Island)
