Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center to host exotic pet surrender event

COON VALLEY, Wis. – What do you do with exotic animals when they are no longer wanted or able to be held anymore? That is where J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue comes in. They are an organization dedicated to providing responsible rehoming solutions for exotic pets while educating the public on proper animal care. That is why they are hosting an Exotic Pet Surrender Event at Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center on April 19. This event provides a safe, judgment-free opportunity for individuals to surrender exotic pets they can no longer care for, no questions asked.

Local organizations will be on-site to accept a variety of exotic pets, including fish, invertebrates, reptiles, pet birds, small mammals, and plants. Attendees will also have the chance to meet animal ambassadors, learn about responsible pet ownership, and take photos with rescued animals at a special photo booth.

Macy Yohr, JRAAR’s Surrender Event Specialist

“In many areas, there simply aren’t enough resources for people who need to rehome their exotic pets,” said Macy Yohr, JRAAR’s Surrender Event Specialist. “Rather than releasing them into the wild, where they can harm local ecosystems and struggle to survive, this event offers pet owners a responsible and compassionate alternative.”

  • Adoption Availability: Surrendered animals will be placed for adoption after a mandatory quarantine and observation period. Same-day adoptions will not be available.
  • Accepted Species: Fish, invertebrates, reptiles, pet birds, small mammals, and plants.
  • Non-Accepted Animals: Domestic pets and farm animals—including but not limited to dogs, cats, rats, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, horses, pigs, and chickens—will not be accepted. Please contact your local Humane Society for rehoming assistance.
  • Native Wildlife: Wisconsin native animals taken from the wild cannot be accepted. For wildlife assistance, visit the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website to locate a licensed rehabilitator.
  • Out-of-State Animals: Birds, reptiles, and mammals originating from outside Wisconsin must have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health certificate).
