WESTBY, Wis. — Westby Area High School hosted a mock crash simulation this week to show students the real-life consequences of dangerous driving decisions.
Student volunteers took part in the staged scenario, portraying victims involved in a serious crash, while local law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and rescue crews responded as they would in an actual emergency. The demonstration showed the coordinated efforts required at a crash scene, including traffic control, medical treatment and vehicle rescue operations.
After the simulation, students, staff and responders gathered in the high school gym for a debriefing focused on decision-making behind the wheel and the lasting impact that impaired or reckless driving can have on families, first responders and the broader community.
Agencies and organizations participating in the event included the Westby Police Department, Westby EMS First Responders, Westby‑Christiana Fire Department, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, Vernon County Emergency Management, the MedLink helicopter crew, Tri‑State Ambulance and George’s Auto, along with school staff, students and community members.
School officials said the event was designed to raise awareness and encourage safe driving habits among students.
