Metamorphosis gap semesters at Viroqua’s Thoreau College now offering 15 college credits

Oct. 1, 2025

VIROQUA, Wis. — Thoreau College is pleased to report that their fall 2025 Metamorphosis Gap Semester is well under way. As in previous semesters, students from all around the United States are in the Driftless area taking part in Environmental Humanities studies and shared community, along with hands-on experiences of folk arts, homesteading skills, and outdoor expeditions. What is new in 2025 is that students enrolled in this low-debt, high-impact gap semester program may now earn college credits through Thoreau’s partnership with Prescott College. This new option proves a pathway for students seeking to integrate experiential learning with future academic goals.

Founded in 2015, Thoreau’s gap semester programs offer low-cost, immersive, and community-centered educational experiences inspired, in part, by the life and writings of Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau College has attracted national attention for its unique blend of rigorous academics, physical labor, artistic exploration, and spiritual reflection. Enrollment remains intentionally small, typically fewer than 20 students per cohort, allowing for deep personal mentorship and a strong sense of community among students and faculty.

The Metamorphosis Gap Semester program “reflects our ongoing commitment to reimagining what a college education can be,” said Jacob Hundt, founding director of Thoreau College. “We are bridging the gap between intellectual inquiry, manual work, and community engagement.”

“Thoreau College is a place where students not only learn about the world, but also actively participate in shaping it,” said Rachel Olson, Thoreau’s new Academic Coordinator “Our programs empower students to live deliberately, just as Thoreau himself encouraged.”

The college is currently accepting applications for its 2026 spring and fall terms.
