Mental Health Awareness Month aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote open conversations about mental health

The Vernon County Department of Human Services is highlighting May as Mental Health Awareness Month, a national movement dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting understanding, compassion, and access to care. Let’s take the time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote open conversations about mental health in our communities.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet millions of people still struggle in silence. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.

The goal of Mental Health Awareness Month is to remind everyone that help is available, recovery is possible, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles. Mental health is for everyone. Whether you’re managing your own mental health or supporting someone else, Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to come together as a community, learn more, and take action toward well-being.

Throughout the month of May, we invite community members to engage in mental wellness activities, attend local events, and learn how to support loved ones who may be dealing with mental health challenges. Whether it’s sharing your story, checking in with a friend, or exploring self-care resources, every action helps build a stronger, more compassionate community.

Ways to Get Involved:

  • Wear Green: Show your support by wearing green, the official color of mental
    health awareness.
  • Share Resources: Post mental health facts and resources on social media to
    help spread awareness.
  • Check In: Reach out to friends, neighbors, and loved ones—sometimes a simple
“how are you?” can make a big difference.
Let’s work together to create a community where mental health is openly discussed,
and everyone feels empowered to seek support. This May, and every day, mental
    health matters.
