VIROQUA, Wis. — Vernon County authorities have identified the logger injured in a Wednesday accident as Cole Scott Leis, 34, of Wilton, Wisconsin.
Sheriff Roy Torgerson said Leis was struck in the head by a falling tree while cutting another tree on private property along Brush Hollow Road in the town of Webster. The incident happened around 12:30 p.m.
Leis was first taken to Vernon Health in Viroqua by La Farge Area Ambulance and later transferred to Emplify Health in La Crosse by Gundersen.
The sheriff’s office said Leis was wearing a hard hat, which likely reduced the severity of his injuries. La Farge and Viola fire departments assisted at the scene.

VIROQUA, Wis. — Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports that on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received a report of a logging incident on private property along Brush Hollow Road in the Town of Webster.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a professional logger was cutting down a standing tree when a different tree fell nearby and struck him in the head. The Sheriff noted that the nearly spontaneous occurrence highlights the inherent risks of the logging industry.
The injured man was transported to Vernon Health in Viroqua by the La Farge Area Ambulance. The La Farge Fire Department and the Viola Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
The logger was wearing a hard hat, which likely reduced the severity of his injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said.
